100% Precision-Cast Stainless Steel Electric Pumps: The Consolidated Choice for Critical Installations

100% Precision-Cast Stainless Steel Electric Pumps: The Consolidated Choice for Critical Installations

23 Mar 2026

In extremely hostile environments such as desalination, the thermal sector with very high-temperature waters, and underwater and mining extractions, the optimal choice of construction material for submersible electric pumps and motors falls on precision-cast stainless steel.

Unlike components made of cast iron or mixed alloys, which would undergo premature degradation and wear in such environments, precision-cast stainless steel ensures the chemical and mechanical resistance indispensable for these applications.

From the Casting Process to Hydraulic Performance: What Changes with Precision Casting

Saying "stainless steel" is not enough. The difference lies in the production process. Precision casting allows for complex hydraulic geometries to be obtained directly from the casting process, reducing dimensional tolerances and optimizing impeller profiles without excessive subsequent machining. The result is more efficient hydraulics and a more regular internal surface, which reduces friction and erosion wear, especially in the presence of sand or fine particulate matter.

Body, impellers, shaft: when all these elements are made of the same precision-cast material, galvanic corrosion problems arising from contact between different alloys in saline, brackish, or mineral-rich waters—exactly the typical fluids of the systems in which these pumps operate—are also eliminated.

Three Grades of Stainless Steel, Three Scenarios for Submersible Pumps and Motors

Not all stainless steels are equal, and choosing the wrong grade means nullifying the investment. The practical distinction is this:

AISI 304 is the reference austenitic steel for fresh water, aqueducts, agricultural irrigation, and civil applications where corrosiveness is contained. Excellent quality-to-price ratio, wide availability.

AISI 316 introduces molybdenum into the alloy, and with it, a significantly higher resistance to chlorides. It is the standard for coastal installations, brackish water, industrial wastewater, and medium-salinity desalination. In wells a few hundred meters from the sea, 316 is not a premium option: it is the correct choice.

AISI 904L is a high-nickel, high-chrome, and high-molybdenum austenitic superalloy, with a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) index that makes it suitable for extreme conditions: concentrated chlorides, acidic waters, industrial reverse osmosis, and mining applications with aggressive fluids. It costs more, but in certain environments, it is the only material that holds up.

The FBSX Series of Submersible Pumps and Motors in Precision-Cast Stainless Steel

Within this technical scenario lies the FBSX series by FB Pompe, available in 6", 8", 10", and 12" diameters. These are semi-axial submersible electric pumps with monobloc construction in precision-cast stainless steel, available in the three stainless steel grades described above.

The stated performances are of industrial significance: flow rates up to 9,500 l/min, heads up to 700 m, and hydraulic efficiencies up to 84.5%. This last figure—often overlooked in purchase specifications—translates directly into lower annual electricity consumption, with a significant impact on the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of high-usage systems.

The monobloc construction and component standardization reduce scheduled maintenance times and simplify spare parts management. In deep installations or environments with limited access, where every intervention has a high logistical cost, these aspects are not merely accessories.

Discover the FBSX Range in Milan - MCE from 24 to 27/03.

FB Pompe is bringing the FBSX series to Milan at the MCE (Mostra Convegno Expocomfort) fair, where it will be possible to directly consult with the company's technical team on application specifications, steel grade selection, and system sizing. For those who must make decisions about a critical installation, this is the type of conversation that a catalog cannot replace.
