Reverse osmosis treatment systems: the electropump and the application determine efficiency and sustainability

14 May 2026

Reverse osmosis is an increasingly central technology in water treatment today, used in various fields such as industry, water supply, agriculture, and desalination processes. In many contexts, where the quality of the water resource is under pressure from salinity and drought, these systems have become a concrete response to make water suitable for final use.
In agriculture, reverse osmosis systems are increasingly used to treat brackish water and protect crops and land from damage caused by salinity.
In these systems, energy efficiency, operational continuity, and choosing the right electropump make the difference in system performance.

FB submersible electropumps for reverse osmosis: the case study in a fruit-growing context

In a recent project for a fruit-growing company in Southern Italy, FB, in collaboration with New Water System Engineering Srl, a company specializing in the creation of advanced water treatment systems, responded to the need to guarantee precise and continuous irrigation through a reverse osmosis system for brackish water.

The project, followed by Eng. Nicola Paparusso together with FB sales agent Vincenzo Libraro, had the objective of ensuring reliable water treatment, with reduced consumption and continuous operation.

We therefore proposed to move beyond the classic vertical multistage configuration, by installing an 8" submersible electropump made of precision-cast stainless steel from the FBSX series, mounted horizontally and equipped with a Booster cooling jacket, ideal for aggressive applications like brackish water.

Advantages of FB submersible electropumps: efficiency and reliability for brackish water treatment

This technical choice resulted in immediate advantages for the client:

  • 24/7 continuous operation: the system is capable of operating continuously and reliably 24 hours a day, eliminating machine downtime which, during periods of drought, can significantly undermine crop productivity.
  • Energy savings of up to 10%: thanks to the optimization of the operating point and the high efficiency of the FBSX series, a concrete reduction in electricity consumption is achieved, up to 10%.
  • Total protection from condensation: the booster cooling jacket eliminates the formation of condensation inside the technical room and electrical panels at the source, protecting the electromechanical and electronic components and drastically extending the useful life of the entire system in corrosive environments.
  • Operational comfort and quietness: the horizontal configuration reduces vibrations and noise in the container, making the work environment more livable for operators.

The reliability of a submersible electropump is the heart of every reverse osmosis system: corrosion-resistant materials such as AISI 316 and AISI 904L, rigorous testing, and energy optimization guarantee continuous operation and stable yields even with aggressive brackish water.
An approach that prioritizes quality and pre- and post-sales support reduces machine downtime and costs, transforming the challenge of saline intrusion into an opportunity for coastal agriculture. In this way, every system acts as a concrete support for long-term productivity.
